Trojans emerge victorious as 2022 campaigns comes to an end

CROWN POINT, Ind. — Last night the Trojans wrapped up their 2022 campaign with a showdown under the lights against the Jaguars of Governors State University. After falling behind early in the first half the Trojans came back with a vengeance to defeat the Jaguars 3-2.

From the whistle the Jaguars stormed the Trojan goal, burying a goal in the opening two minutes. Gathering their bearings Trinity responded with immediate and consistent offensive pressure, calling the Jaguars goaltender to come through on three separate occasions within a four minute span. An unfortunate turn of events led to Governor State's second goal just eight minutes after their first and the Trojans found themselves facing a 0-2 deficit with a lot of game left to play. With less than five minutes remaining, sophomore Elizabeth Bayert found the back of the net to cut the scoreline in half at the break.

Looking to equalize quickly, the Trojans came out of the half time break with an added fire and converted quickly as freshman Sarah Krick scored her sixth goal of the season, this one assisted by midfielder Emily Soriaga.  With a fresh start at 2-2, Trinity settled in and looked for an opportunity to break through again. Feeling the frustration of giving up a two goal lead, the Jaguars peppered the Trojan goal shot after shot with senior goaltender Sarah Davis answering the call and holding the Jaguars from an additional tally on the scoreboard. Trinity countered quickly with a chance at goal by junior transfer Madelynn Stacy but the Jaguars' keeper stood firm.

As the clock dwindled, tensions rose and both sides were booked by the official. Minutes later, TIU hit twine once more with a banger by Soriaga, assisted by senior Abigail Olsson. Taking the lead 3-2 after facing an early two goal deficit, the Trojans bunkered down to stave off the remaining fire of the Jaguars and closed out their 2022 campaign victorious.

Leading the attack for the Trojans were Emily Soriaga and Morgan Busick with four and three shots each, respectively, but the Trojans saw contributions from eight different players. Senior Sarah Davis held 90 minutes in the goal with 11 saves.

Following the conclusion of last night's game, the Trojans wrap up their 2022 campaign with a record of 5-11-2 overall and 4-8-1 in conference. Head coach Morgan Helms and her assistant Isabelle Danner look now to the offseason to rebuild, recruit and develop.
