Trojans defeated by penalty kick from Tigers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Yesterday afternoon the Trojans traveled to Michigan or a non-conference match-up against the Tigers of Grace Christian University, fellow National Christian College Athletic Association members.

Despite nearly doubling the Tigers in shots and saves in the first forty-five minutes, the Trojans were unable to put anything on the score sheet. Led by captain Zachary Mawdsley and sophomore Maqiis Haywood each with four shots, Trinity sailed a total of 16 attempts towards the Tiger net to no avail as the keeper came up with eight saves to deflect Trojan hopes.

Within the first three minutes of the second half, the Trojans hoped to capitalize on a corner kick attempt and early shot but the Tiger keeper stood firm. Following an offside call in the 53rd minute, TIU gave up an unnecessary foul inside the penalty box to give Grace Christian a free look at Armin Mahmutovic in the goal. Despite an incredible season so far, the sophomore keeper was unable to stop the shot stacked against him and the Tigers took the lead. Throughout the second half the Trojans would send an additional 11 shots towards goal, forcing the Tiger keeper to come through for his team on six different occasions to keep the clean sheet.
At the final whistle, the penalty kick goal would be enough to secure defeat of the Trojans.

Zach Mawdsley hit a career high five shots while Jovan Jankovic had a season high with three of the same. Maqiis Haywood also had a season high performance with four shots and two on goal.

Experiencing a bit of a lull in their season, the Trojans (6-4, 4-2) hope to bounce back against the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University this weekend as they face off on Saturday, October 8th at 5:00pm in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
