Trojans split doubleheader in tournament appearance

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio --- The Trojans traveled over to Ohio to participate in the Mount Vernon Nazarene University Tri-Tournament, splitting a pair of matches in their northern foray.

The Trojans were faced with a tough draw in their opening match, squaring off with the host school, the 19-5 Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene.

The first set was a tightly contested one, with the Trojans receiving contributions from up and down the roster to keep things close. Five different Trojans recorded kills in the set, with Lana Vojosevic leading the way with four, but Trinity was overcome by a 25-17 margin.

The Trojans again leaned on a diverse set of contributors to hang tight in the second set, battling back after falling behind 10-5 with four straight scores courtesy of kills from Vujosevic, Brianna Torres, and Madison Williams, all set up by the Trojans' workhorse setter Anna Skrzypchak. Trinity managed to remain on nearly equal terms for much of the stanza before the Cougars pulled away late, scoring five of the last six points to win the set, 25-16, and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

While the Trojans struggled uncharacteristically in the third set, falling behind 15-2 after a Cougar ambush saw the Trojans concede 13 points in a row, they showed their fight after accruing the massive deficit, scoring thrice in a row out of a timeout. The late surge wasn't enough, however, as the Trojans dropped the set, 25-7, and the match with it.

With mere moments to refocus and refuel before a battle with Lourdes University, the Trojans showed their professionalism and mental toughness by rebounding with a clinical performance in the nightcap of the twinbill.

Right from the get-go, the resilient Trojans weren't messing around, scoring seven of eight points early in the set to increase their slim 7-5 advantage to an imposing 14-6 mark. Employing an even more dangerous multi-pronged attack with six unique killers in the set, Trinity put the frame on ice by scoring the final six points, with veteran standout Brianna Torres putting things away with the final kill of a 25-16 set win.

The Trojans continued to play with a purpose in set number two, staking out a slim lead early on before swelling the advantage with a string of six straight scores to go up 21-11. Lana Vujosevic was on a mission for Trinity, with the star from Montenegro notching an eye-popping eight kills in the set to lead the Trojans to a 25-17 set victory and a commanding two-sets-to-none lead in the match.

The Trojans made quick work of Lourdes in what would prove to be the final set of the afternoon, finishing the trip off with their most dominant work of the tourney. After jumping ahead 3-2, Trinity unleashed a devastating onslaught on the unsuspecting Lourdes squad, scoring 16 of 17 points in the middle of the set to balloon their advantage to a video game-esque 22-4. Torres again put the finishing touches on the set, recording her sixth kill of the stanza to send the Trojans home victorious.

The Trojans (17-5) will be back in conference action following Saturday's brief interlude on Tuesday night, October 11, when they square off with Olivet Nazarene University back home at Van Dixhorn Arena.
