Trojans seal first win with 21-point final quarter

LIVONIA, MI — On the road again, the Trojans squared off with another non-conference opponent out of state, this time traveling to the mitten to face the Crusaders of Madonna University. After strong first and final quarters, the Trojans marched off with a 65-60 road victory over Madonna.

Off to a slow start, the Trojans fell behind 6-0 before back to back jumpers by junior transfer Jakyah Amous put the Trojans on the board. Madonna pushed forward with a couple layups, answered by Trinity to tie the score at 10-10. TIU broke the tie and rode the lead into the second quarter with a three point advantage at the buzzer.

The Crusaders came out hot, sinking a three-pointer in the opening minute to tie it up again before increasing the lead by two more. Senior Breleigh Gula evened the score again at 20-20 to initiate a short run of seven points for the Trojans, capped by a jump shot from sophomore center Saskia Stegbauer. Madonna took the lead following a couple free throws and three-pointer. It would be short lived as the Trojans pushed forward with back to back baskets to close out the second quarter 29-27.

Out of the gates, Madonna dropped another layup to tie the score before the sides battled over the lead for the remainder of the quarter. Neither team managed more than a three point cushion until the Crusaders sunk a triple in the final minute. Stegbauer grabbed ten points in the stanza, out-shooting all other players on her way to a career best game scoring.

Entering the fourth quarter with a four point deficit, the Trojan offense simmered as the Crusaders continued to increase their lead by as many as 12 points. With six minutes remaining, a layup from Da'Naria Washington ignited the Trojan attack as they scored 20 points against Madonna's three to claim a five point victory and their first of the season.

Both Washington and Stebauer were one rebound from double-doubles as they led the scoring for Trinity with 16 points each. Audree Peck matched rebounds with nine also, while Jakyah Amous rounded out the top three offensive contributors with 11 points.

The Trojans (1-2) return to Deerfield for their home opener next Wednesday, November 9th against their first CCAC opponent, the Trolls of Trinity Christian College.
