Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ethan Oskroba

Trojans continue solid start with tournament split

HUNTINGTON, IN—The Trojans took to the war path over the weekend, marching across the Indiana border in their first foray into tournament play this season. While the Trojans earned a split, their offense continued to click, and their multifaceted attack bodes well for Trinity's chances as the squad ramps up for conference action.

Trinity took to the court for a Friday night showdown to start off the weekend, clashing with the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Trinity appeared unfazed by the long ride to their destination as they came out firing, racing out to an 8-1 lead on the strength of a trio of close-range jumpers splashed home by paint presence Diamond Presniakovas. However, the lead evaporated as the half wore on, and despite an impressive showing from New York native Monte Lambert that saw him drop 12 points including a pair of triples, the Trojans found themselves trailing at the break by a 46-38 margin.

Much like in their season-opening victory, the Trojans were behind entering the latter half and quickly set to work to erase the deficit, with Jack Kahoun putting home a short-range bucket to put Trinity ahead just over three minutes in. The second half was a back-and-forth affair until Kahoun drilled a triple with just over four minutes to go to put the Trojans ahead for good before Brandon Lawani stuffed home an emphatic slam to seal the deal, giving the Trojans a 77-71 victory.

As Saturday dawned, the Trojans had visions of a 3-0 start, but would be turned away by the tournament host, Huntington University, in that ambitious pursuit. The high-powered Trojan offense was firing on all cylinders in the first half, as Trinity established a 53-47 advantage with emerging star sophomore guard Kyonte Thomas leading the way with 13 points.

Unfortunately, the Trojans would suffer the reverse of the come-from-behind brilliance that they'd doled out to their opponents in each of their first two victories, being outscored 49-23 in the final 20 minutes to lose for the first time this season. Despite the defeat, the Trojans still managed to have four scorers in double figures, with Kyonte Thomas (15 points), Jaden Thomas (14), Lawani (10), and Colby Cross (10) all impressing for Trinity.

The Trojans will look to build on their strong start to the 2022-23 season when they take on Trinity Christian in the Trojan home opener and initial CCAC clash at Van Dixhorn Arena on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m.
