Trojans struggle to overcome early deficit, drop final game to Fighting Saints

NOTRE DAME, IND. ---  This afternoon the Trojans traveled to Indiana to tip off against the Fighting Saints of Holy Cross College for their final game of the 2021-2022 season. After a lacking first quarter, the Trojans struggled to come back from the early deficit and fell to the Saints, 63-52.

Trinity got off to a slow start as the Fighting Saints went on a 13-2 run in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Trojans tried to gain momentum after a defensive rebound by Taylor Hibicke led to a jumper by Alina Jahnke. Shortly after, Louisa Schmidt followed up with another to bring the score to 6-17. During the final five minutes, Trinity went on a 9-4 run and closed out the half with a 3-pointer by Taylor Hibicke.

Out of the break, the Trojan offense started converting with a 6-1 run as Carly Scheblo dropped consecutive jumpers and Daniela Lopez added another from the paint, bringing the score to a single digit deficit, 23-30. The Fighting Saints answered quickly with another seven points to a single jump shot by Da'Naria Washington in the next two minutes. With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Holy Cross scored eight unanswered points before Scheblo hit a jumper with two minutes remaining and Louisa Schmidty sank a 3-pointer seconds before the buzzer.

With ten minutes to go, Trinity looked to turn things around as they started with a 13-6 run. Back to back to back points from Carly Scheblo in between buckets from Da'Naria Washington gave the Trojans a 10 point deficit still to overcome. Scheblow dropped a 3-pointer with five and a half minutes remaining to decrease the score gap, 45-53. As the clock wound down, the Fighting Saints increased their offensive pressure and Trinity struggled to match them defensively and fell to defeat.

Unfortunately, the Trojans will not qualify for postseason play and will end their season with an 11-16 overall record and 6-15 record within the CCAC.
