BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The Trojans kept their win streak alive last night, adding a sixth consecutive victory to their record as they defeated the Jaguars of Governors State in a clean sweep of their latest CCAC opponent.
After a rough start to the set, the Trojans were down 5-0 before they started picking up steam. A kill by Lily Crosby, assisted by Anna Skrzypchak started a four point rally for TIU to tie the game then take the lead they would hold the remainder of the game. At 12-9, Skyrzypchak took over serving and notched two aces alongside kills by Brianna Torres and Nadia Wheeler. From there, the two teams traded points, neither team scoring more than two points consecutively. Skrzypchak resumed the serving position and closed out the game with a service ace to take the first set 25-15.
Changing the tempo from the start of the first game, the Trojans rocketed out to an 11-4 lead with Torres serving. The outside hitter dropped two aces within an eight point rally that included two kills by Lana Vujosevic and one by Madison Williams. Governors State pushed back and closed the gap 11-7 before Skrzypchak landed a kill to quelch their momentum. With a six point lead, the Trojans lost their focus and gave up consecutive attacking errors and allowed the Jaguars to come within three points. After that, the scoreline would only increase as the Trojans went on a kill spree led by Torres and Williams before winning the second set, 25-17.
TIU jumped out to another early lead and looked as if they'd run away with the whole game before a slew of errors gave away six points to the Jaguars and the game was suddenly close again. From 14-4, to 15-11, the Trojans struggled to gain composure and take back momentum. Given a second chance, the Jaguars rallied, scoring back to back points while refusing the same to the Trojans. Finally, with a tied game at 23-23, Governors State took a timeout to plan for the remaining points but it was to no avail as the Trojans benefited from an attacking error out of the break. The score again tied at 24-24, extra points were forced as the Trojans took the 25th point after another kill by Williams. Not done yet, the Jaguars earned back to back points and a 25-26 lead. Led by Williams once again, the sophomore middle blocker notched three kills to bury the game and complete the Trojans sweep.
Over the Jaguars, Madison Williams earned a season high 13 kills, tying her career record while Desirae Pisano had a career high 12 digs on the night. Last night's victory was Coach Luke Ward's 130th as head coach of the Trojans.
