CROWN POINT, Ind. — The Trojans drove to Crown Point, Indiana last night for their latest CCAC match-up against the Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest. A physical battle through and through, the Trojans ultimately came out on top with their first victory of the season, defeating the Redhawks 1-0.
From the opening kick, the Redhawks sent a screamer towards the Trojan backline that was easily cleaned up by outside defender Elizabeth Bayert. Both teams battled to sustain possession throughout the next few minutes until TIU caught IU Northwest with a high defensive line as junior Abigail Olsson slipped a through ball between defenders for freshman Sarah Krick to run onto. Noticing that the goalkeeper was far off her line, Krick sent a chip over top and scored her second collegiate goal.
The 1-0 lead would ultimately hold for the remainder of the game but the following 84 minutes proved to be a battle of physical play and determination of will. Both teams played a hard, brutal game of soccer that at times looked more like a war than a game. Throughout the first half, Trinity kept their composure and didn't tally a single foul. The Trojan offense notched a total of eight shots compared to the Redhawks two.
In the second half, play began to get out of control as a total of ten fouls were called and five yellow cards handed out, including one to goalkeeper Sarah Davis for mishandling the ball outside of the penalty box. Continuing to protect their one goal lead, the Trojans began locking down their defense allowing just two shots on goal and zero corner kicks to the Redhawks.
A total of nine Trojans completed the full ninety minutes, an impressive feat of endurance and strength. Of the nine, Davis notched 90 minutes in goal, collecting three more saves. Krick scored the game winning goal, notching her second game in a row putting a point on the board for the Trojans. Olsson earned the assist on TIU's lone goal by Krick, giving out three shots on goal in collaboration with Payton Siragusa and Morgan Busick who had one and two shots, respectively.
