TIU held to stalemate with Lawrence Tech

BANNOCKBURN, Ill.— On a steamy Saturday afternoon at TIU's Schartner Field, the Trojans battled the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech to a 0-0 deadlock.

The Trojans came out of the gate slowly as they settled into the contest before finding their rhythm in a big way, creating several meaningful chances. While the first half appears dull from a glance at the box score (zero goals or bookings), it was anything but for TIU's defensive unit, as Zoe Villont, Kalie Rice, Morgan Busick, Micah Wassink, and Cresencia Kerr all shined on the back end for Trinity. But the last line of defense was perhaps the most impressive for the Trojans, as senior keeper Sarah Davis denied seven shots on frame in the stanza, including a full extension diving effort to protect the near post and a leaping deflection to tip a dangerous attempt over the bar. The veteran Davis also showed remarkable judgment when deciding when to come off her line, staving away seven Blue Devil corners and intercepting numerous dangerous balls into the box.

After the scoreless first, the Trojans continued to press on in pursuit of breaking the ice with an opening goal, with Payton Siragusa and Elizabeth Bayert (2 shots, 1 shot on goal each) giving Trinity their most promising chances to end the stalemate. As the match wore on, the physicality rose to a new level, with several Trojans showing their strength in a final 30 minutes that saw the referee reach for his yellow card four times. Despite the fact that the Trojans used only three substitutes for a total of just 49 minutes, the starters appeared none the worse for wear, showcasing their perseverance and durability throughout the second half despite the oppressive heat that forced the officials to call for water breaks midway through both halves. Villont, Bayert, Rice, Busick, and Wassink, as well as midfielder Kinsey Gomez and striker Abigail Olsson, played the entire 90 minutes without relief. Despite the conditions, the Trojans held firm, creating a few more quality chances and witnessing Davis make another 6 saves in the second frame to complete a remarkable 13-save clean sheet and preserve the game's final score, 0-0.
