Trinity stumbles in conference battle with IU South Bend

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. —  At home once again, the Trojans took on the Titans of IU South Bend on Saturday afternoon in their latest conference battle. The over-the-border rivals landed the first points to take the first and only lead as the Trojans were defeated 55-73.

A few miscues in the opening minutes put the Trojans behind 3-9. Xavier Cooper sank four 3-pointers in a span of four and a half minutes to reel in the Titans to a single bucket on each occasion as they continued to march forward. With 11 minutes remaining, IU South Bend hit a short run of five points before Cooper answered again but this time stealing possession before lifting an easy layup. In the final minute of the half the Titans held a seven point lead before Brandon Lawani grabbed back two before the buzzer. IU South Bend led 28-33 into the halftime break.

Back on the court, the Titans sprang forward with back to back buckets to increase their lead to ten points. Dropping consecutive 3-pointers, Kyonte Thomas and Jack Kahoun cut their debt on the scoreboard to single digits. A few moments later, TIU came within eight points before their foe burst ahead to double figures once again and for the final time. Though the Trojan offense continued their fast-paced, hard-hitting ways, their efficiency faltered in the final minutes despite outshooting their foe. Diamond Presniakovas dropped the last TIU bucket with four minutes remaining as the Titans kept climbing, defeating the Trojans 55-73

Leading the Trojan attack once again, Xavier Cooper was in stride tonight as he shot 4-5 from beyond the arc and collected a season-high seven field goals. His 21 points was a career best. Trinity shared the load beneath the boards, with seven different Trojans snatching a rebound. Brandon Lawani led the effort with five grabs.

The Trojans rank third in the nation as they average 11 steals per game.

Trinity(13-12) hits the road next week for their final string of regular season competition with a visit to the Fighting Bees on Monday evening, a rescheduled game from last December. Tip off is slated for 7:30pm.
