Feisty first quarter fizzles out as the Trojans fall at home

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. — Saturday afternoon the Trojans were on their home court for the third Saturday in a row as the reigning number one seed Indiana South Bend made the trek to TIU. A spirited first quarter saw the Trojans ahead by a single point before the Titans charged ahead in the second, never looking back. At the final buzzer, the Trojans fell 30-67.

With energy and determination, the Trojans entered the court ready to take on Goliath and throughout the first ten minutes, it seemed they could make him fall. Trinity sank the first bucket before the Titans answered with a three-pointer. The Trojans hit a short run of four points with layups from sophomore Audree Peck and junior Kaiya Albert while stealing possession and grabbing a defensive rebound in the same stretch. With four minutes remaining, IU South Bend knotted the score at ten. After trading buckets, the Trojans sprang ahead with a trey from senior forward Breleigh Gula, followed by a pair of charity points from the hands of Peck. At the quarter mark, the Titans trailed 17-16.

While the first quarter saw an animated Trojan force, the Titans responded in kind with an 11-point run to open the second frame. Gula landed the lone bucket for TIU as IU South Bend commanded the floor and burst forward by an 18-point margin at the halftime break.

The Trojans were held to single-digit performances the remaining two quarters as the Titans displayed why they hold the conference leading spot and a 22-2 record.

Audree Peck garnered her third double-double of the season as the budding sophomore leader continued to dominate beneath the boards, collecting ten rebounds and ten points. Kaiya Albert dropped 11 points to lead the Trojan attack while also grabbing a team-leading three assists.

Trinity(3-22) enters their final week of the season with two games remaining. Wednesday evening the Trojans will travel to Calumet College of St. Joseph before returning to Van Dixhorn Arena on Saturday to celebrate their graduating seniors.
