Trinity defeated by Cougars in Friday night fight

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Earlier this evening the Trojans faced off against the Cougars of Saint Xavier University in a rescheduled match-up from last week after inclement weather hit the Chicagoland area. Despite the Trojans high energy and obvious camaraderie to start the match, the CCAC number two seed made quick work of TIU in the final set to take the match in three.

From the start the Cougars nabbed a quick 0-3 lead before high-flying freshman Matthew Perry smashed a perfect set from fellow freshman Ethan Losinger to break it up. Saint Xavier jumped ahead again 2-6 before succumbing to a bout of errors that nearly equalized the scoreline. Outside hitter Soren Halvorson slammed the next Trojan kill, again aided by Losinger. The Cougars hit a short run of four to double to Trojans, 7-14, before an extended 1-9 run. At 10-24, Saint Xavier gave up a service error before a Trojan miscue of the same to end the set, 11-25.

Again the Cougars took the first points before the Trojans jumped ahead 4-2 behind a Jaylen Thompson kill, a service ace from Parker Lundberg and a pair of attacking errors from their foe. Saint Xavier evened the score at 5-5 then cruised past the Trojans on their first run of the game, jumping ahead 5-11. Trinity landed a couple of blocks as Matthew Perry then Ethan Losinger denied the Cougar hitters in back to back attempts, bringing the crowd to their feet with their teammates whooping with praise. In the end, Saint Xavier claimed the set 15-25.

The Cougars hit the ground running in the third set, jumping to a 2-10 lead. Perry sent another to the floor for the only Trojan kill of the set before Saint Xavier hit a 1-8 run, creating a lead that would be insurmountable for Trinity. The Trojans received a few gift points from Cougar errors before the CCAC-rival closed out the set 9-25 and claimed the match.

The Trojans(0-10) have a quick turnaround as they hop in the vans tomorrow morning for a tri-match at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. TIU will square off with Life University at 12:00pm ET and then the host school, Cornerstone, at 2:30pm ET.
