Trojans drop close battle at Cardinal Stritch

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Trojans were back on the road last night with their first night of back to back CCAC matches. After three sets, Trinity fell to defeat at the hands of the Cardinal Stritch Wolves.

From the start, the Wolves hit a 2-7 run that was broken up by an aptly called time out. The two sides traded points from there as the Trojans pulled up closer to their foe, decreasing the score to 6-9 after a kill from Soren Halvorson. Trinity continued to fight back, but the Wolves seemed to grab two for every TIU score as they grew the lead to 9-15. Another Trojan time out broke up momentum again before Halvorson notched two more kills. At 12-17, the Wolves went on a 1-5 run, disrupted by a kill from freshman Jaylen Thompson. Trinity scored two more before the Wolves closed the set 15-25.

The Trojans opened scoring in set two with a kill from Thompson before taking a 4-2 advantage. Matthew Perry recorded a kill as Jaret Wiler earned his seventh service ace of the year. Trinity held the Wolves at bay, as Perry notched an ace and freshman Ethan Losinger slipped a sly attack over the net. Cardinal Stritch knotted the score at 13-13 and 17-17 in a tightly contested game. Falling behind 17-19 the Trojans called for time and benefited from a service error to break the short run. At 19-20, the Wolves hit their final stride with a five point run to claim the second set, 19-25.

A rough start, Trinity fell behind 0-9 before Perry put the Trojans on the board with a smashing kill. Wiler sank another service ace, followed by sloppy play from the Wolves to give the Trojans a bit of a boost. Trailing 11 points, the Trojans strung together one of their longest runs of the season, going for nine consecutive points and cutting the score to 17-19. Perry notched one more kill, but the Wolves would finish the game 18-25  as the Trojans efficiency waned in the final moments.

Soren Halvorson matched his previous season high of five kills, leading the Trojans offense with Matthew Perry close behind providing four. Jaret Wiler recorded a team high four service aces. Continuing in his role as reliable deliverer, Ethan Losinger gave out 15 assists.
