TIU splits against Kentucky Christian

KODAK, Tenn. — On Wednesday afternoon the Trojans played a doubleheader with the Knights of Kentucky Christian University, fellow NAIA and NCCAA opponent. After two games, the results were split with each team walking away with a four-run margin of victory.

Game One: TIU 3, KCU 7
Trinity got off to a slow start in the opening game as the Knights jumped ahead four runs in three innings. The foe added another in the top of the fourth before Trinity's offense ignited to take back three runs.

Jonathan Kumai led off with a line drive to center field, but was sent packing after a fielder's choice when Alfonso Gomez hit a ground ball to third base. Veteran Blake Lazaris stepped up with a single, followed by a lapse in pitching accuracy to gift the Trojans two bases and send Gomez across the plate. With bases loaded, Riley Murphy placed a hit in left field and earned an RBI. Brady Popovich grounded into a fielder's choice, but earned an RBI on the play as the Trojans cut the score line to 3-5 at the bottom of the fourth.

The Knights scored two more runs in the sixth inning while putting up a stand on defense to hold the Trojans at a 3-7 final result.

Max Amendt took the loss for TIU after going for 3.2 innings and allowing five runs. Joseph Plascencia and Addison Hickman came in for relief.

Game Two: TIU 8, KCU 4
The Trojans flipped the script in game two, scoring the first runs of the game on their way to their seventh win of the season. Senior Julius Torres led off with a single to left field, before stealing his second base. The Knights defense wavered as they sent two in a row walking to put the Trojans in scoring position. Riley Murphy hit a sac fly to center field, earning an RBI as Torres crossed the plate.

Both teams tightened their defense, holding the other to minimal batters before scoring opened up again in the fourth inning. Trinity scored three runs on two hits and crafty base running. Freshman Christian Soria-Navarro earned a walk, then stole second and third. Jimmy Cisneros took his base before Torres and Jonathan Kumai smacked back to back doubles to left field to grow their lead to 4-0. The Knights took back one in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Trojans added three runs to the score. Torres took his base, then stole two more as Kumai was also sent walking. Taking advantage of a passed ball, Torres crossed home. Murphy stepped up to the plate again, connecting on a line drive double to center field and scored two more for the Trojans. KCU matched Trinity in the bottom of sixth, scoring three runs as well to bring the score to 7-4.

Brady Popovich led off with a single before Cisneros cracked a triple to left field to score the final run of the game. Trinity's defense held firm their final stand with a trifecta of defensive plays to collect their latest victory.

Sophomore Michael Zelko threw a complete game, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out two.
