Defensive errors cost road victory as Trojans fall to Titans

LAKEVILLE, Ind. — Trinity was on the road again yesterday afternoon as they traveled south for a rescheduled match-up against the Titans of Indiana University at South Bend. Despite a close battle in both games, the Trojans ultimately dropped both results in their latest conference clash.

Game One: TIU 2, IUSB 5
The initial three innings went scoreless as each team gave solid defensive efforts with just four hits between the two sides. Momentum began brewing for the Trojans in the top of the third as freshman Alisyn Fullingim recorded her first career triple. Seemingly rattled, the Titans pitcher sent Gigi Redman to first on a walk the next at bat. Redman stole second, and with two players in scoring position and just one out, TIU looked as if they would take the lead. A single from Haley Slaymaker loaded the bases before the Titans defense came up with a big stop double play to close the inning.

Offense firing, the Trojans once again found themselves with runners in scoring position. Casey Cousino connected with a base hit towards the shortstop and sent Josie Nelson across the plate for a 1-0 advantage Trinity. The Titans executed well on offense, giving a sac bunt and bagging two stolen bases in order to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

At the plate again, Redman stayed disciplined and again took her gifted base. Veteran Heather Anderson knocked a base hit RBI to give the Trojans the go ahead run.

A crack in TIU's armor appeared in the sixth inning and they gave up three errors, resulting in four runs for the Titans. With one last chance to equalize the score again, the Trojans struggled at the plate and were held to three batters.

Game Two: TIU 8, IUSB 9
Jumping back in, the Titans bagged a run in the bottom of the first inning before both teams locked up defense in the second.

The Trojans caught fire in the third inning, recording six hits and five runs to sprint ahead on the scoreboard. Haley Slaymaker led off with a double, followed by a single from Redman and double from Alayla Thornton. With runners in scoring position, Josie Nelson gave the sac fly to left field to earn the RBI. Despite sitting on two outs, Trinity continued to rally with three more base hits before the Titans secured the final out. Trinity led 5-2 ending the third inning after IUSB grabbed one back in the home half.

Continuing their momentum from the previou inning, the Trojans racked up three more hits and added three to the scoreboard after Adnerson, Nelson, and Izabella Hernandez collected consecutive singles. The Titans came up with a double play stop to get out of the inning without further damage.

Trinity's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the bottom of the fifth inning as IUSB got hot at the plate, racking up four hits and capitalizing on a Trojan error to cut the score deficit to just two runs. After tightening their defense in the top of the sixth, the Titans tied the game on a 2 RBI triple in the bottom of the inning.

With the score tied going into the seventh inning, theTrojans were retired in short order and IUSB managed to walk off with the game with an RBI single.

Trinity International (2-20, 0-8) is set to take the field again on Friday afternoon as they travel to Elgin, Illinois for a meeting with the Eagles of Judson University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
