Trojans dominate in non-conference battle with the Sabercats

WHEELING, Ill. — The Trojans found their offensive stride on Tuesday afternoon as they squared off with the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University. Trinity scored over 30 runs in the doubleheader, subjecting the visitors to the run-rule in both games.

Game One: TIU 14, MBU 0
Trinity started hot from the start as Heather Anderson sailed a 2 RBI homer to the fence in the first inning and the Trojans collected three additional hits to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Josie Nelson recorded a career first triple in the following inning, earning 2 RBI before crossing home plate herself on a single by Jenna McIntyre.

As the offense continued to roll in the third inning, smashing seven hits and scoring six runs, the Trojan defense locked up tight. Gigi Redman led the Trojans from the circle, taking seven of nine batters from her dealing alone in the final three innings. Anderson grabbed a fly foul and Izabella Hernandez recorded the ground out to secure a scoreless game for Maranatha.

The Trojans added just one more to the board in the fourth inning, an RBI triple from Alayla Thornton, before the Sabercats fell to the run rule.

Gigi Redman took the win for TIU, throwing a complete game with 11 strikeouts, no walks and just three hits. Heather Anderson recorded her second career home run while Alayla Thornton and Josie Nelson grabbed triples. Trinity had a total of 15 hits and zero errors.

Game Two: TIU 18, MBU 0
The scattered sparks of offense throughout the first game turned into a blaze in the second outing as the Trojans burst ahead 13 runs in the first inning. Collecting nine hits, the Trojans also benefited from four fielding errors and multiple pitching miscues as they forced two changes on the mound during the inning.

Staying focused on defense, Trinity played a perfect game on the field while allowing just five batters above the minimum as they run-ruled the Sabercats once again.

Haley Slaymaker led the defensive movement from the circle, throwing a complete game with nine strikeouts and allowing five hits. Freshman Izabelle Hernandez cracked her first career home run, earning 2 RBI on the play, while Ashley Griffith and Alayla Thornton each added a triple to their resume. The Trojans recorded 15 hits and zero errors.

Up next, TIU (5-23, 1-11) takes to the highway tomorrow afternoon for a pair of games downtown as they resume CCAC action against the Lakers of Roosevelt University. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:00pm in Rosemont.
