Trojans defeat Sabercats in non-conference doubleheader

WATERTOWN, Wis. — Yesterday afternoon the Trojans went north for a pair of non-conference games with a familiar foe, the Sabercats of Maranatha Baptist University, for their third face to face doubleheader of the season. Their previous results were replicated once more as Trinity swept the Sabercats on the cloudy afternoon.

Game One: TIU 9, MBU 4
The two sides played a tight game of defense in the opening innings until the Trojans broke through in the top of the third inning. Julius Torres took his free base after getting hit by the pitch, then stole one more before Jonathan Kumai batted him in with an outfield single to give the Trojans a one run advantage. The lead didn't last long however, as the Sabercats matched it in the home half.

Bursting ahead, Trinity scored three runs from four hits in the top of the fifth, with Torres, Jimmy Cisneros, Riley Murphy and Ethan Oskroba each recording a base hit.

Continuing their momentum from the previous inning, the Trojans scored four more runs in the sixth. Falling behind early, Trinity extended their offensive pressure despite two outs and scored two runs and four hits with their backs to the wall.

Brady Popovich smashed a home run to add another to the Trojan side of the scoreboard. The center fielder's first career homer claimed the final TIU run of the game. The Sabercats grabbed back two more in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately fell short and the Trojan's emerged victorious.

Joseph Plascencia went the distance for the Trojans, collecting his fourth win of the season. Riley Murphy and Ethan Oskroba both went 3-4 with two RBI apiece.

Game Two: TIU 14, MBU 4
Trinity got the bats swinging early as they recorded seven hits and runs in the first three innings to create a steady lead over Maranatha. After the first two Trojans were marked out, RIley Murphy and Ethan Oskroba stepped up with back to back doubles, followed by Seth Lewallen and a base hit. The offense carried on in the second, with Julius Torres collecting a triple, and Charlie Mctamanay taking a single alongside Oskroba.

The Sabercats pushed back in the bottom of the fourth, connecting for a pair of hits and runs to cut the score to 7-2 before the Trojans ran away with the game for good in the top of the fifth. Oskroba hit his fourth home run of the season to nab two RBI and position himself for the possibility of hitting the cycle.

At the top of the sixth inning, TIU scored three more runs to put the game out of reach with Oskroba recording the final hit, a triple to right center to complete the cycle after having recorded a single, double, and home run earlier throughout the game.

Taking the win for the Trojans, Ethan Oskroba threw a complete game from the mound while offensively breaking the single game record for most RBI, which he had tied just the week before against Roosevelt University. The pitcher collected eight RBI and two runs while striking out three. Julius Torres had a solid outing against the Sabercats, going 2-4 with three RBI and two stolen bases, adding to his claim on the top spot in the TIU record book for stolen bases in a single season (42) and career (70).

Trinity International (19-27, 3-20) is on the road again Friday afternoon to begin their final CCAC series of the season, a single game against the Fighting Bees of St. Ambrose University. The Trojans return home for the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and will honor their graduating seniors between games. Opening pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
