Schartner Field

Schartner Field

The home field of Trojan men’s and women’s soccer, Schartner Field is named in honor of longtime TIU coach Mark Schartner.

Schartner became the head men’s soccer coach at Trinity in 1973, just a year after earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching from TIU. In 13 seasons at the helm of the Trojan men’s soccer program, Schartner led Trinity to over 67 wins and the university’s first taste of the national spotlight. Schartner coached the Trojans to the 1974 NCCAA National Championship, the first national title in any sport in school history. He also led TIU to four NIIC conference titles during his tenure, with three total NCCAA Tournament appearances, including nearly winning another national title in 1979.In addition to his work as men’s soccer coach, Schartner also coached a number of sports for the Trojans, including baseball from 1979 to 1983, wrestling in the 1970’s, and golf in the 1980’s.

Schartner Field has been seen as one of the toughest venues to play at in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) for both visiting men’s and women’s teams. A natural grass surface, opponents have battled through intense games against TIU while also at times having to battle the elements of nature. Since 1998, the Trojan women’s team has won five CCAC Tournament championships and three regular season conference crowns while calling Schartner Field home.
