LaMont Johnson Jr. joined the TIU football staff in the spring of 2020 as coach of TIU’s quarterbacks.
Johnson joined the Trojan program after spending the previous three seasons as wide receivers coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
Johnson played high school football at Livonia Churchill, before attending Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minnesota. After an 0-9 season in 2013, Johnson and the rest of his class helped turn the program around, leading the team to the semifinals of the conference championship. While at Vermilion, Johnson earned All-Academic honors along with All-Conference honors and was a team captain. In his two seasons of play, he racked up a total of six touchdowns and 600 yards.
After graduating with his Associate Degree at Vermilion, Johnson received a scholarship to play at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. Johnson was also a two-year captain, received All-Conference honors both years, and was the leading receiver on the team his first year. He finished his Waldorf career with 700 yards and four touchdowns. In his senior year at Waldorf, he participated in the NCAA Division II vs. NAIA Senior Bowl game in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he started and also scored a touchdown. In the same year, Johnson participated in the NFL Regional Combine and he has had several CFL tryouts and interest from four NFL teams.
Johnson graduated from Waldorf with a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2017, and is currently working towards a master’s degree in organizational management from St. Ambrose.
