Irvin Jerry was named the 13th head coach of the Trinity International University women’s basketball team in May of 2017.
Under the leadership of Coach Jerry, the Trojans have seen a transformation of the women's basketball program that has seen the team go from winning just six games in his first season in 2017-18 to 18 wins in 2019-20.
At his fifth season at the helm, Jerry led the Trojans to an 11-16 overall record and 6-15 in the CCAC. Jerry earned his 50th career win at Trinity International on February 5th against Roosevelt University in a close game, defeating the Lakers 65-52. Under his leadership this season, Alina Jahnke crossed the 1,000 career point threshold while Taylor Hibicke totaled over 800 career points and her first career triple-double against Calumet College of St. Joseph.
During his fourth season in 2020-21, the Trojans finished 10-10 in the COVID-19 shortened season, qualifying for their second consecutive CCAC Tournament, and earning their first postseason victory since 2013
In his third year at TIU in 2019-20, the Trojans finished with their first winning season in nine years and qualified for the CCAC Tournament for the first time since 2013. Coach Jerry's third year also saw Trinity receive a berth to the NCCAA Tournament.
During his time at TIU, Jerry coached two NCCAA All-Americans, seven NCCAA All-Region, and five CCAC All-Conference players, plus nine CCAC all-academic and nine NCCAA scholar-athletes.
Jerry spent the previous four seasons before coming to Trinity as the head women’s basketball coach at San Diego Christian College in southern California, where he amassed a 42-68 record as head coach of the Hawks. Under Jerry, the Hawks posted three Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament appearances, including a 2015 tournament upset of NAIA power Vanguard University.
In his time at SDCC, Coach Jerry recruited and coached two time All-Conference and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention performer Brittany Daniel, as well as All-Conference performer Natalie Perales. In addition, two of his teams earned NAIA Scholar-Team honors, and in three separate years his teams received votes to be ranked in the nation.
Prior to being named the Hawks head coach, Jerry spent three previous seasons as the women’s basketball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Coach Jerry has a wealth of experience in education, ministry and basketball. He served as a youth leader in his father's church, and also taught high school for twelve years and coached at the high school level for ten years before moving to the college ranks.
Coach Jerry's focus is on helping instill Godly characteristics into his players. Coach Jerry stated, “My goal is for my actions to reflect my love for Christ." He also believes in teaching fundamentals on both sides of the ball and works to inspire players to reach their potential on and off the court.
When asked what drew him to Trinity International, Coach Jerry said, “I believe we can build something special at Trinity. I loved the closeness of the athletics staff and administration I saw during my interview process. There are a lot of things in place that will allow us to build a sustained winner.”
Coach Jerry earned his B.S. in Kinesiology from San Diego State University in 2003. He also earned his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Point Loma University in 2010.
