DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Junior forward
Samantha Yasatan becomes just the 4th player in the NAIA this season to reach the 20-goal mark, as the Racine, Wisc. native collected four goals to lead the Trinity International Trojans to a 6-0 win over the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave, as the TIU Homecoming Weekend kicked off Friday afternoon as Schartner Field.
Box Score | Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Trojans (7-2-2, 3-1-2 CCAC) looked to control the match from the opening minute, and quickly found the back of the net. Yasatan broke through in the 13th minute for her first score, as junior
Morgan Elzinga was credited with her first of four assists in the match.
Less than two minutes later, midfielder
Melissa Loretto scored her third goal in the last two matches, on an Elzinga corner kick. Nikki Post headed the ball from the far post, back to Loretto, who put the Trojans ahead 2-0 with a header of her own.
Yasatan effectively put the game away over the next six minutes. The junior scored her second goal of the match, and 18th of the season, in the 16th minute, then earned her second hat trick of 2014 in the 21st minute. Elzinga, Post, and
Taylor Richards all picked up assists on one of the two goals that stretched Trinity's lead to 4-0, well within the first half hour of play.
In the 28th minute, the Trojans extended their lead even further, with their fifth goal of the half, again from Yasatan, after a pass from
Michele Streekstra that set up the play. Five goals matches the team's highest scoring total in a half this season; the Trojans also put up five goals in the first half against Purdue-Calumet on Sept. 27.
The tempo slowed quite a bit in the second half, but the Trojans did tack on another goal in the 71st minute. Senior
Kathryn Baccash scored her first goal of the season, and third of her career, after scoring on the rebound of a shot from Loretto.
The win marks the fourth match this season where the Trojans have scored at least six goals, and the second-straight six-goal performance, after Tuesday's 6-1 win over St. Xavier.
Defensively, the Trojans allowed just seven shots to the Crimson Wave, the fewest number of shots by a TIU opponent in their last four matches. Senior
Elizabeth Burzynski picked up her third shutout of the season, and improved her record on the year to 6-1-1.
The Trojans will take the rest of the weekend off, before preparing for their next match, at Cardinal Stritch. Trinity will head to Milwaukee on Saturday, October 18, for their only night game of the season. Kickoff against CSU is set for 7:30 p.m.
