DEERFIELD, Ill. -- With three unanswered goals to start the game, the Trinity International Trojans looked poised for a Homecoming win, but three unanswered goals from Calumet St. Joseph quickly tied the match in the second half, resulting in a 3-3 draw Saturday afternoon at Schartner Field.
Box Score | Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Trojans put away two first-half goals, then added another in the 60th minute to move ahead 3-0, but the Crimson Wave countered with three goals in a ten-minute span to force extra time and ultimately the draw.
Joseph Sanborn but the Trojans on the scoreboard with his third goal of the season in the 9th minute, as
Noah Smith was credited with the assist.
Brett Robinson made it a two-score game with his goal in the 21st minute, his second of the season. TIU dominated possession in the first half, outshooting Calumet 12-3 before the first break.
With a 2-0 halftime lead, the Trojans searched for their third score of the match, something the team has done just twice previously this season. In the 60th minute,
Erik Yamane did just that, scoring his fourth of the season after connecting with Robinson and
Zach Reget, who each picked up assists.
About eight minutes after Yamane's goal, the momentum quickly shifted. Calumet got on the scoreboard in the 68th minute, on a Emmanuel Awuku penalty kick. CCSJ threatened much of the final twenty minutes of regulation, and broke through again in the 73rd minute, with the first of two goals from Nick Barango.
With a little over 12 minutes to play, Barango found the equalizer, and the match went into extra time. There were a number of good chances on both sides in the extra twenty minutes, as the Trojans out-shot the Crimson Wave 4-1 in the extra sessions. Neither side could break through, however, and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
The Trojans will take the week off before their next match, when they travel to Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, October 18. Kickoff from Bavarian Soccer Complex in Glendale, Wisc. is set for 5:00 p.m.
