ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Trailing by two goals after less than 14 minutes into the match, the Trinity International Trojans responded with two quick goals before halftime, then scoring the game-winner in the 54th minute to cap off the comeback and defeating the Robert Morris Eagles on the road, 3-2.
Box Score | Season Stats | CCAC StandingsRobert Morris took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 20-second mark of play, blitzing the Trojans on a breakaway as RMU's Booklyn Kerlin shot was tapped into the left side of goal. Trinity then fell into a 2-0 hole 13 minutes later, with Natalie Mercier's goal at the 13:51 mark.
TIU generated five shots on goal in the first half, but weren't able to get on the scoreboard until the 43rd minute, when
Morgan Elzinga scored from 25 yards out. Less than two minutes later, in the closing seconds of the first half, CCAC goal-scoring leader
Samantha Yasatan scored the equalizer, for her 26th goal of the season. Despite falling behind early, the Trojans went into the break with a 2-2 draw.
Both sides played a fairly even first half, as the Trojans and Eagles each took six shots, and neither side had a corner kick opportunity.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Elzinga scored her second goal of the night, and ninth of the season, putting away a loose ball in the 54th minute. The goal gave Elzinga her fifth game-winning goal of the season, which also leads the CCAC.
With the victory, Trinity International clinches a spot in the upcoming CCAC Tournament, and secured at least the No. 6 seed. TIU returns home this weekend for the final home regular season match of the year, when they host St. Francis on Saturday, November 1. Kickoff against the Saints is set for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff, as the team will recognize the four Trojan seniors as part of the Senior Day festivities.
