DEERFIELD, Ill. -- After being kept off the scoreboard for their last two matches, the Trinity International Trojans made up for their scoring drought in a big way Tuesday afternoon, defeating the St. Xavier Cougars 6-1 at Schartner Field. Three different players scored a pair of goals each for the Trojans, who tallied three goals in each half en route to their sixth win of the season.
Box Score | Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Trojans (6-2-2, 2-1-2 CCAC) actually fell behind early, when the Cougars struck in the seventh minute, on a shot from 25 yards out by SXU's Cassie Pullia. The Cougars would get ten more shots off throughout the rest of the match, but the TIU defense would not allow another goal, as senior keeper Liz Burzynski made seven saves on the day.
Trinity found the equalizer just four minutes later, when
Morgan Elzinga put away her fifth goal of the season, with Layla Zahnizer picking up the assist. From that point throughout the rest of the match, the Trojans seemed to gain momentum, but were only ahead of the Cougars on shots, 8-7 at the half, and were even in the match, with 12 shots for both sides.
CCAC-leading scorer
Samantha Yasatan ended her two-match drought as well, scoring what would ultimately be the game-winner in the 22nd minute. The junior rushed into the box from the left side after Elzinga and
Melissa Loretto worked the ball in, and scored her 15th goal of the season to put the Trojans ahead 2-1.
Loretto would earn her first goal of the season just before halftime, after a penalty was called on the SXU defense. In the 41st minute, Loretto quickly scored from the spot to give her team a two-goal edge heading into the break.
All three goal-scorers in the first half would do so again in the second, led by Yastatan's give-and-go combination with Loretto right off the opening kick. In just ten seconds, the Racine, Wisc. native had her 16th goal of the season.
Loretto and Elzinga finished the scoring with their goals in the 59th and 63rd minutes, respectively, giving the Trojans their third match of the year with at least six goals scored. Loretto came away with the most points in the match, as she recorded three assists as well, giving her nine points on the day.
TIU will look to keep the momentum rolling as they now prepare for their Homecoming match on Friday, October 10. The Trojans will host Calumet St. Joseph, starting at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, October 11, during the men's match, members of the 2004 NCCAA National Championship women's soccer team will be recognized, as part of the Homecoming celebration. Kickoff for the men's soccer game on Saturday is set for 3:00 p.m.
