DEERFIELD, Ill. -- On a windy, 30-degree afternoon, the 24th-ranked Trinity International Trojans overcame the cold weather, as well as a 2-1 deficit, coming back to defeat the St. Francis Saints, 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at Schartner Field. Junior forward
Morgan Elzinga put away the game-tying and game-winning goals to advance her team to the CCAC Tournament final, set for this Saturday at Olivet Nazarene.
Box Score | Season StatsThe Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, when
Samantha Yasatan's cross from the right led to
Melissa Loretto's seventh goal of the season. TIU, the No. 2 seed in the CCAC Tournament, held their 1-0 through the halftime break, but the 6th-seeded Saints scored two goals in a four-minute span that threatened to end TIU's postseason hopes.
USF's Leslie Rueda scored the equalizer in the 54th minute, then less than three minutes later, her teammate Brianna Ferrias scored to suddenly put St. Francis in the drivers' seat with a little over half an hour remaining.
Elzinga answered with goals in the 65th and 67th minutes, both assisted again by Yasatan, to put her team back on top. The Wisconsin Rapids, Wisc. native tallied her 14th and 15th goals of the season, moving her into 3rd on the CCAC top scorer's list this season.
With the win, Trinity advances to the CCAC Tournament championship match, scheduled for Saturday, November 15 at Olivet Nazarene. Since the Tigers already punched their ticket to the NAIA Tournament by claiming the CCAC regular season title, the Trojans will earn the conference's second bid as either the tournament champion, or the finalist, with ONU claiming both conference titles.
Game time for Saturday's tournament final will be announced later this week. The NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship field will be announced Monday, November 17th at 1:00 p.m. CST, at NAIA.org.
