"We preach that to win games down the stretch, we need stops and free throws. We got three big stops to end the game, and went 17-for-21 from the line," said head coach Boomer Robers after the game. "It's a great win for our program."
The Trojans took an early lead on an and-1 layup from Ball, and a three-pointer from Amrine, leading to an 8-2 edge at the 17:45 mark of the first half. TIU lead throughout the entire first half, going up by as much as 12 points on a trey from Wadsack that put the Trojans in front 19-7 with 15:40 to play in the first. Indiana-South Bend briefly pulled to within a single bucket however, with an 8-0 run throughout the middle of the first half. Eight points from Amrine, including a pair of threes, helped to put the Trojans back in front, as TIU went into the locker room with a 48-39 advantage.
Trinity held a small lead throughout most of the second half, but a pair of threes were key to an 8-2 run from the Titans, who quickly tied the game at 71-71 with 2:41 to play. IUSB took the lead on a layup from Riley Stichter, following a Trojan turnover, then increased their lead to 75-71 on another layup during the following possession.
As the Titans looked to increast their lead even more in the final minute, Ball came up with a big defensive stop for TIU, blocking a shot that led to a dunk from Chatman on the other end of the floor. After drawing a foul, Chatman knocked down the free throw to make it a one-point game. A Titan turnover then led to Chatman drawing another foul and pair of free throws, putting the Trojans ahead 76-75 with 39 seconds on the clock.
TIU increased their lead to three with two more free throws, this time from Salem, with six seconds left. Following a TIU intentional foul, Indiana-South Bend had a chance to steal the win in the last second after a free throw and an offensive rebound, but the buzzer-beater missed and the Trojans secured their sixth win in the last seven games.
"I couldn't be more proud of our guys," said Roberts. "We came on the road against a good team, and found a way to win. We have some things we need to correct, but we dug deep when we needed to.
Sam Salem made huge play after huge play, and [Chatman's] monster dunk and free throws were clutch."
The Trojans return home this Saturday, January 17, when they host Purdue-Calumet. Tipoff against the Peregrines is set for 3:00 p.m.
