Trojan defense slows Illinois Tech for non-conference win

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Junior forward David Chatman led Trinity International with 17 points, but it was a full team effort as five players finished in double figures, and the Trojans earned an 83-47 victory over the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on Monday night inside Van Dixhorn Arena. The TIU defense helped to secure the team's ninth-straight win, forcing a season-high 32 turnovers and holding the Hawks to the lowest point total by any Trojan opponent this year.

Illinois Tech took an early lead after Samuel Rarick scored the first two of his 30 points on the night, then IIT's Manish Suthar connected on a three to give the Scarlet Hawks a 5-2 advantage in the first minute of play. The Trojan defense responded by forcing six turnovers on Illinois Tech's next seven possessions, and going on a 9-2 run capped off with Dillon Wadsack's three-pointer at the 15:55 mark.

The Trojans would lead the rest of the way, building their lead throughout the night despite connecting on a season-low three three-pointers. Trinity's big men were featured in the attack all night, with forwards Nate Ball, Chatman, and James Glass combining for 42 points in the win.

Rarick cut the Trojan lead to three midway through the first half with a layup and foul, connecting on the free throw for the three-point play with 8:31 remaining in the half. TIU answered with a big run, beginning with five straight points from Sean Smith as part of a 15-1 run that put Trinity ahead by as much as 17 points. TIU went into the locker rooms with a 41-25 advantage, thanks in part to 20 first-half turnovers from their opponents, and 24 points off those turnovers.

Trinity pulled away throughout the second half, with Chatman's nine points leading the team after the break.

With the win, Trinity International moves above the .500 mark for the first time since the season-opening win over Clarke (Iowa) on Oct. 31. TIU also owns the CCAC's longest winning streak, and are winners in 10 of their last 11 games.

Smith and Glass each finished with 14 points off the bench, in an identical 23 minutes of action. Ball collected 11 points in the win, and Justin Peeples contributed 10.

The Trojans will re-enter CCAC action this Wednesday night, January 28, when they host Calumet St. Joseph in Van Dixhorn Arena. Tipoff against the Crimson Wave is set for 7:30 p.m.
