Ten in a row for Trojans after win over Crimson Wave

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Junior James Glass recorded his first career double-double, while four of his teammates finished in double figures as Trinity International earned a home victory over the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave, 77-64, Wednesday night in the Van Dixhorn Arena. The win gives TIU a 10-game win streak, the program's longest in nearly 20 years.

Senior center Nate Ball led the Trojans with 16 points, including an 8-for-9 performance from the free throw line, and nine rebounds. Sam Salem collected 13 points along with a team-high five assists. Dillon Wadsack came off the bench to post 11 points, while Justin Peeples scored 10.

With the Trojans' usual three-point attack going cold, with a season-low .167 (5-30) shooting percentage from long range, the Trinity big men stepped up. TIU pulled down 24 offensive rebounds, finishing with 31 second-chance points to the Crimson Wave's 10.

"Tonight was a great team effort once again," said head coach Boomer Roberts after his team's sixth-straight home victory. "We've had so many guys step up when needed, and James Glass and Nate Ball were very good today. CCSJ is an excellent rebounding team, so to have 24 offensive boards just shows the toughness that we play with. We didn't play smart all the time, and we didn't shoot it very well, but we defended at a high level for a majority of the game."

Calumet jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks in part to a 1-for-7 start from the field for TIU. The Trojans warmed up, however, tying the game with a layup from Wadsack at the 16:07 mark of the first half, then going in front for the first time after the senior knocked down a pair of free throws a minute later to make it an 8-7 Trojan advantage.

Trinity would go on to lead by as much as 13 points after a pair of James Glass free throws with 5:49 to play until the halftime break. The Crimson Wave would battle back, though, using an 18-4 run over the final five and a half minutes to move in front, 36-35 at the half.

CCSJ's Marcus Moody scored the first bucket of the second half, putting the Wave ahead by three, but the Trojan defense would lock out their opponents over the next 4:30, forcing Calumet to go 0-for-7 from the field and committ three turnovers during that span. Salem's fast break at the 15:11 mark would put TIU in front 45-38 and cap a 10-0 for the Trojans.

Salem would again highlight a big TIU run later in the second half, as his three-pointer with 4:17 to play gave TIU eight straight points, and brought the raucous crowd inside the Van Dixhorn Arena to their loudest point of the night. Trinity led by 13 at that point, and would hold off any comeback attempt in the closing minutes to secure the win.

"We had a great crowd again tonight, which made for a terrific atmosphere," said Roberts. "I'm very pleased with the progress of our group, but we'll keep working to improve."

TIU's 10-game win streak currently stands as the longest since the 1995-96 season, when the Trojans won 12 straight en route to an NIIC conference title and appearance in the NAIA national tournament.

The Trojans will look to get one game closer to that school-record long streak, when they face a tough Roosevelt Lakers squad on the road in CCAC action this weekend. Tipoff from the Goodman Center in downtown Chicago is set for Saturday, January 31, at 3:00 p.m.
