Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Thomas Amrine and
James Glass led Trinity International with 12 points apiece, but a pair of big runs from the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers proved to be too much to overcome as the Trojans fell in exhibition play, 85-61.
Thomas Amrine's three-pointer to open the scoring gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the night, but Trinity would hold their own throughout most of the first half. Milwaukee wouldn't take a lead until a pair of free throws at the 15:27 mark edged the home team in front, 6-5.
The Panthers were in front 17-10, when
Greg Carlyle sparked a quick 9-0 run with back-to-back layups, and Amrine put Trinity back in front 19-17 with one of his four three-pointers on the night, with
Sean Smith's three-pointer at the 4:48 mark gave TIU a 26-24 edge for their latest lead of the night; Milwaukee would answer with four straight three-pointers, highlighting a 17-0 run to close out the half.
Trinity came out strong at the start of the second half, cutting the deficit down to 11 with a layup from
James Glass with 15 minutes to play. The Panthers started to pull away from that point, however, using a 19-7 run to claim a 70-45 lead with 7:51 to play.
"I'm really proud of how we played for the first 16 minutes," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts after the game. "We held a lead with four [minutes] to play against a really good Division I team. Eventually their size took over, and we struggled to keep them off the offensive glass. Altogether, I'm really proud of the fight we showed, especially with one of our starting five out of the lineup."
David Chatman finished with eight points on the night, going 3-for-6 from the field.
Grant Corsi and
Zach Kirschbaum collected six rebounds each to lead the Trojans.
"[Milwaukee head coach] Jeter has put together a strong team that looks to be among the top programs in the Horizon League this year," said Roberts. "It was a great experience for our guys to compete against a quality opponent, and we look forward to doing it again tomorrow."
Trinity will have a quick turnaround for their next game, as they will travel to face another NCAA Division I foe in Chicago State. The Trojans will take on the Cougars tomorrow afternoon, at 2:00 p.m.
