Men's Basketball opens LaQuinta Classic with win over Silver Lake

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Thomas Amrine led the way with a team-high 15 points, as three players finished with double figures, in Trinity International's 82-68 victory over Silver Lake (Wisc.), Friday night at Van Dixhorn Arena, as part of the 2015 LaQuinta Classic.

Box Score | Season Stats

Amrine knocked down four three-pointers, going 4-of-8 from long range. Grant Corsi, who was the team's top scorer in the season-opening win over Clarke (Iowa) last week, finished with 13 points, while James Glass recorded ten.

After a close battle in the opening minutes, the visitors found themselves with an early 8-5 advantage on Denzel Smith's jumper at the 15:29 mark of the first half. A score from Corsi, followed by a steal and slam from Henry French gave the Trojans (2-0) the lead, starting a 13-2 run for TIU that was capped off with a three from Amrine with 10:12 still to play in the half and the Trojans in front 18-10.

Trinity knocked down nine three-pointers on the night, seemingly always at just the right time. Freshman guard Jeremy Carlyle gave TIU a double-digit lead with a trey with 7:18 left in the first half, at 24-14. A pair of Silver Lake free throws would trim the edge back down to eight, but on the next possession Luke Mead would knock down a three to build it back up to 11, at 27-16.

The Trojans would pull away the rest of the first half, taking their biggest lead before halftime on a Corsi free throw with 23 seconds remaining. TIU led 44-25 at the break, as Amrine would score 13 points in the first half to lead the team.

Outscoring the Lakers 9-4 in the first two and a half minutes of the second half, the Trojans lead would grow to 53-29 on a Carlyle steal and fast-break layup at the 17:34 mark. Mead's layup with eight minutes to play gave TIU their largest lead of the night, 29 points, at 74-45.

Silver Lake rallied over the closing minutes, scoring 12 straight to cut the lead down to 17 at 74-57 with 5:57 to play. Free throws down the stretch from French, Corsi, and Amrine would keep the visitors from pulling off a comeback.

Zach Kirschbaum finished with a game-high 13 rebounds in the win, while Mead led the Trojans with four assists on the night. Carlyle picked up four steals in his collegiate home opener.

Trinity returns to Van Dixhorn Arena tomorrow night, for a 6:00 tipoff against 14th-ranked Grace (Ind.), to close out the 2015 LaQuinta Classic.
