DEERFIELD, Ill. - In their toughest test of the early season, Trinity International shot a season-best 40.9 percent from the field, but ultimately suffered an 86-71 defeat to the 14th-ranked Grace (Ind.) Lancers, Saturday night inside Van Dixhorn Arena. Junior forward
Grant Corsi led the way with a game-high 19 points as the Trojans finish with a 1-1 mark at the 2015 LaQuinta Classic.
Box Score | Season StatsCorsi nearly picked up his first double-double of the year, recording nine boards, while shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Freshman guard
Jeremy Carlyle knocked down five three-pointers to finish with 15 points on the night, while senior
James Glass recorded 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
The Trojans (2-1) jumped out to an early lead when Glass scored three times in the team's first three possessions, giving TIU a 6-2 edge in the opening two minutes of play. An 8-0 run for the Lancers (4-0) gave the visitors a lead they would go on to hold the rest of the way.
Corsi and
Zach Kirschbaum would lead the team with eight first-half points apiece, while Kirschbaum would also add in seven rebounds before the break. The Trojans would stay within single digits of the Lancers throughout much of the first half, but a quick 7-0 run led to a 48-35 halftime advantage for Grace.
Trinity would trim the deficit in the first few minutes after the break, with Corsi's fast-break layup at the 17:50 mark getting the Trojans back to within single digits.
Henry French's jumper on the next possession trimmed the lead further, and after a pair of Lancer free throws, Carlyle would cut the lead to eight points with 15 minutes to play, with one of his five treys.
Three straight scores, including a pair of threes, would suddenly give Grace a 15-point edge, at 61-46 at the 14:01 mark. Glass would get the lead back down to 12 points with a score in the final minute, but Trinity would run out of time to make a run.
The Trojans will wrap up the current three-game homestand on Tuesday night, when they host Emmaus (Iowa). Tipoff against the Eagles is set for 6:00 p.m.
