Marlou Peters earned her first double-double as a Trojan, finishing with 24 points and ten rebounds on the night. Guard
Sarina Pitson-Falvo led the team with 25 points, going 11-for-15 from the field, and 3-of-5 from long range. Point guard
Rayelle Ross nearly had a double-double herself, posting 10 points with nine boards, while freshman
Jendayi Campbell picked up 12 points in the win.
The Trojans (1-1) improved on their shot in a big way from last week, shooting 52.6% as a team, compared to their 23.2% performance in the season opener. Peters finished the night having gone 12-for-14, and all four leading scorers for TIU shot 50 percent or better, with at least nine attempts.
TIU led the game wire-to-wire, after Pitson-Falvo scored the first five points of the night. The Cairns, Australia native picked up the first 10 points for the Trojans, leading the team to a 10-6 advantage in the first four and a half minutes of the first period. The Trojans would take a 14-point lead on Ross' layup at the buzzer, ending the first quarter with a 24-10 lead.
That lead would swell to as much as 24 points in the second quarter, when Trinity doubled-up their opposition on Campell's fast break layup at the 0:28 mark. A pair of free throws would bring it back a few points, but Trinity would head to the locker room with a 48-26 lead, with Pitson-Falvo scoring a team-high 16 points before the break.
Back-to-back layups from Peters midway through the third quarter would give Trinity a 25-point edge, 55-30. Emmaus would finish the period on a 10-2 run however, cutting the margin back down to 17 with a pair of late free throws, 57-40.
Eight unanswered to start the fourth would put the game away, with
Parris Bryant, Peters, Pitson-Falvo, and
Donielle Taggart all getting in the mix late in the game.
The Trojans are back in action tomorrow night, when they host Cincinnati Christian in the second day of the LaQuinta Classic. Tipoff against the Eagles is set for 4:00 p.m.
