WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- In their final day of their spring break swing through Florida, the Trinity International Trojans were dealt a pair of losses, including one in walk-off fashion, falling to the St. Francis (Ind.) Cougars, 11-5 in game one of a doubleheader, and 7-6 in the follow-up.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season StatsThree Trojans collected at least one base hit in both games, including freshman
Edward Piotrowski who went a combined 3-for-5 on the day to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games.
Andrew Grotelueschen and
Jon Debowey also both had a hit in each contest.
St. Francis took a three-run lead in the opener, after putting a crooked number on the board in the top of the 2nd. Trinity answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, when a hit batter and a walk put two runners on for
Jeff Lindberg, who drove home
Justin VanderNaald with a single to left. Grotelueschen's groundout two plays later brought in
Joshua Crist to make it a one-run game. The Trojans tied the game at 3-3 in the 3rd, with a VanderNaald two-out double that scored
A.J. Bruner.
The Cougars went ahead for good in the top of the 4th, after scoring four runs on three hits, and a pair of TIU fielding errors.
Ryan Helmeid's two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the 4th cut the deficit in half, 7-5, but another 4-spot in the 6th inning for USF would be enough for the Cougars to secure the game.
In game two, St. Francis again scored first, with two unearned runs in the 1st inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Trojan defense. The Trojans tied the game in the 3rd inning, when Piotrowski's two-out single scored Helmeid. Jon Grotelueschen then reached on an error, allowing Debowey to make it a 2-2 game. Three hits for the Cougars in the bottom of the frame scored one run, as St. Francis took a 3-2 edge through three innings.
With two more runs in the 4th, St. Francis held a 5-2 lead before Trinity put up their biggest rally of the day in the top of the 5th. Three straight singles to lead off the inning from
Andrew Grotelueschen, Debowey, and Piotrowski, followed
Adam Vignola driving in a run by getting hit by the pitch. Senior
Cameron Stanley then doubled to right field with the bases loaded, scoring two and giving Trinity the 6-5 lead.
A leadoff double in the 6th for USF eventually allowed the Cougars to score the tying run on a double play before going into the final inning. The Trojans were unable to capitalize on a leadoff single in the top of the 7th, opening the door for St. Francis in the bottom of the inning. The first three Cougars reached base on a hit by pitch, fielding error, and bunt single, respectively, loading the bases with no out. The Trojans were able to get the next two outs on force plays at the plate, but another hit batter brought home the winning run.
The Trojans will now return to Deerfield and focus their attention on the start of conference play next week. TIU will play host to Cardinal Stritch and Purdue-North Central, in a pair of doubleheaders, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 16-17, at the TIU Baseball Field. First pitch for both dates are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
