Late-inning rallies sink Trojans in home opener

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- With a small lead in both games of a doubleheader, Trinity International suffered a pair of comeback performances by the Purdue-North Central Panthers, who rallied to knock off the Trojans 3-2 in extra innings during the first game of the day, followed by a 4-2 score in the nightcap.

Box Scores | Game 1 | Game 2

Junior A.J. Bruner pitched seven solid innings in game one, scattering eight hits while allowing just two runs. The Trojans took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the 3rd, when Cameron Stanley's two-out RBI triple scored Jeff Lindberg from first. After the Panthers tied the game with a solo home run in the 6th, TIU took advantage of two fielding errors by PNC in the bottom half of the frame, the second of which allowed Jon Debowey to score with two out, giving the Trojans a 2-1 edge.

Another solo shot for Purdue-North Central tied the game in the top of the 7th, in a scheduled 7-inning contest. TIU left two runners on base in hopes for a walk-off victory, but instead went into extras. A leadoff walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to center set the table for the Panthers, who would drive home in the go-ahead run on a single in the next at-bat. Trinity would go down in order to close out the first game, with Stanley and Adam Vignola each going 2-for-4.

Season Stats | CCAC Standings

In the second game of the day, TIU used a pair of two-out walks, plus Debowey reaching base on a dropped third strike, to set the table for another early one-run lead, after Vignola drew another base on balls. After a leadoff triple in the top of the 2nd, PNC tied the game at 1-1 with a groundout to second, allowing the runner to score.

Stanley hit his first sacrifice fly of the season in the bottom half of the frame, bringing home Jon Grotelueschen who led the inning off with a walk. The Trojans held a 2-1 lead throughout most of the game, as Ryan Helmeid allowed just two hits over the next four innings. A leadoff double in the top of the 7th and final inning, however, led to a three-run frame, giving the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

The Trojan center fielder had another strong game in the nightcap, as Stanley went 2-for-3 for his second multi-hit game of the day.

The Trojans hit the road for their first trip of the conference season on Saturday. Trinity will take on the Olivet Nazarene Tigers on March 21, with first pitch of a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 pm.
