Baseball swept in doubleheader at Trinity Christian

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. -- A combined 53 runs were scored over two seven-inning games Wednesday afternoon, as Trinity International dropped a pair of high-scoring contests to the Trinity Christian Trolls, 18-7 in game one, and 20-8 in the nightcap.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Infielder Andrew Grotelueschen had a five-hit performance on the day, going a combined 5-for-8 between both games, and 4-for-4 in game two. Center fielder Cameron Stanley recorded four RBI, including three RBI in the first game, while freshman outfielder Edward Piotrowski also drove in three RBI in the opener.

Trinity Christian scored in all six innings of the first game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead through the end of the 3rd. The Trojans responded with two runs in the top of the 4th, thanks to Stanley's two-RBI single, but the Trolls would increase their lead with a six-run 4th inning, making it an 11-2 advantage.

Season Stats | CCAC Standings

The biggest rally of the day for TIU came in the 5th; Jeff Lindberg led the frame off with a double, then came around to score on Ryan Helmeid's two-out single to right. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Stanley, who brought home a run by taking a hit by pitch. Piotrowski then cleared the bases with his double to center, closing the deficit to four runs at 11-7.

TCC put the game away however, with one run in the bottom of the 5th, then six more in the 6th to secure a 18-7 win in the opener.

In game two, the Trojans got out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the 1st and three more in the 2nd. A.J. Bruner recorded an RBI in each frame, while Adam Vignola, Adam Gomski, and Andrew Grotelueschen all drove in runs. The Trolls responded with eight runs in the bottom of the 2nd however, to take a three-run advantage.

TIU would add a run in the 3rd on Stanley's sacrifice fly, and two more in the 4th, but the Trinity Christian bats stayed hot, scoring 12 runs over three innings to earn a game two win.

The Trojans return home this Friday, March 27, for a single game matchup with Robert Morris. First pitch from the TIU Baseball Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
