BENSENVILLE, Ill. -- Trinity International catcher
Adam Vignola reached base five times, going a combined 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and an RBI, but the Trojans dropped a pair of close games to the Robert Morris Eagles, 3-2 in the first game of the day, followed by a 4-0 result in game two.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2A.J. Bruner put up a strong performance in game one as the starting pitcher, scattering seven hits while striking out five. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning, on a two-run home run from RMU's Andrew Sebastian. Trinity scored their first run of the day in the top of the 3rd;
Jeff Lindberg's two-out walk started the rally, as the sophomore came around to score on
Jon Debowey's double down the right field line.
Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Trojans would then tie the game in the top of the 6th, after Bruner's leadoff single. Vignola drove in the tying run with another two-out double, evening the score at 2-2.
Robert Morris rallied in the bottom of the 7th, however, after TIU got the first two outs of the frame. A walk put the go-ahead run on first, who then came all the way around to score on a single to left center, giving the Eagles a 3-2 win in the opener.
In the second game of the day, Robert Morris posted two runs in the 1st to again take an early edge, then tacked on two more in the 2nd for a 4-0 lead that would hold the rest of the game.
Vignola had the best day at the plate for TIU, going 2-for-3 in the second game, along with a walk. Three relievers came in and pitched the final three innings for Trinity without allowing a run, as
Joshua Beard,
Jon Debowey, and
Jeremiah Carter allowed a combined two hits and struck out five from the 6th through the 8th innings.
Trinity are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Indiana to take on the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. First pitch from Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. is set for 4:00 p.m.
