WHITING, Ind. -- With a three-run shot to break a tie ballgame, junior
Adam Vignola helped lead the Trojans to a split in Tuesday's CCAC doubleheader against the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. Trinity International needed Vignola's first home run of the season to secure a 6-3 victory in game one, before falling in game two 12-8.

Ryan Helmeid recorded a complete game in the opener, scattering nine hits while allowing just three earned runs over seven innings of work. At the plate, first baseman Jon Grotelueschen went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
After CCSJ took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, Grotelueschen led the top of the 3rd off with a double to center field, then moved to third on
Cameron Stanley's infield single in the next at-bat. Both runners moved up 90 feet after a wild pitch, putting the Trojans on the scoreboard and tying the game at 1-1.
Jeff Lindberg's sacrifice fly then brought in Stanley, and the Trojans took a 2-1 lead.
Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Crimson Wave responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame, taking a 3-2 edge into the 5th inning.
Jon Debowey, Grotelueschen, and Stanley led the top of the 6th off with three straight singles, leading to another sac fly, this time from
Andrew Grotelueschen, to tie the game again at 3-3. Vignola followed that up with a three-run homer to put the Trojans in front for good.
In game two, Calumet used an eight-run 3rd, followed by three more runs in the 4th, to take a commanding 12-1 lead midway through the game. Trinity rallied for seven runs of their own in the top of the 5th, as five different players recorded RBIs, including
Adam Gomski's two-RBI single to center field, and
A.J. Bruner's two-RBI double to right.
The Trojans would keep Calumet off the scoreboard the rest of the way, but could pick up just two more hits from the 6th inning onward, as the Crimson Wave were able to avoid a big rally. Freshman
Joshua Beard kept the game close, pitching four and two-thirds shutout innings for TIU, allowing just three hits on the night.
Debowey and Gomski each collected three hits in game two, while Bruner and Jon Grotelueschen picked up two hits apiece.
The Trojans will continue their current 10-game road trip on Thursday afternoon, when they travel north to take on the Cardinal Stritch Wolves in a single nine-inning affair. First pitch from Pewaukee, Wisc. is set for 1:00 p.m.
