DEERFIELD, Ill. -- A two-out, three-RBI double from third baseman
Adam Gomski that looked to be just a foot short of a grand slam proved to be the difference, as Trinity International earned a 4-2 win in the first of two home games against the St. Francis Saints, before falling in game two, 9-6. Starting pitcher
A.J. Bruner threw a gem, pitching a complete game without giving up an earned run on the day.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2All the scoring for both teams occured in the 5th inning, as the Saints were the first to get on the scoreboard thanks to a two-RBI single with two runners on base. In the bottom half of the frame,
Edward Piotrowski started the rally with a leadoff single to left. The next two Trojans were retired before a single from
Jeff Lindberg and a walk from
Cameron Stanley loaded the bases.
Adam Vignola then drew another base on balls, driving in the first run of the day for the Trojans.
Season Stats | CCAC StandingsGomski then drove a ball deep to left field, where it hit off the wall, allowing all three runners to score. Bruner then shut the door, retiring the side in order in the 6th, and stranding the tying run at first in the 7th.
In the second game of the day, St. Francis jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the 2nd, and three more in the 4th, to claim a 7-1 advantage. Trinity chipped away at the deficit in the second half of the game, starting with a run scored by Vignola in the bottom of the 4th, as
Andrew Grotelueschen reached on a fielding error.
The Trojans added two more runs in the 5th, on a sacrifice fly that scored Lindberg, then on a
Jon Debowey single that allowed Stanley to come home to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
After Lindberg and Stanley hit singles to lead off the bottom of the 7th, Debowey picked up his second and third RBIs of the game with a two-out single through the left side, pulling the Trojans to within a run at 7-6.
TIU had a chance to move in front in the 8th, loading the bases, but couldn't score. St. Francis then put the game away with two insurance runs in the top of the 9th to close the door.
Lindberg and Gomski had two hits apiece in both games, going 4-for-7 and 4-for-6, respectively. Debowey had the team's best single-game performance at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 in game two with 3 RBI.
The Trojan bullpen looked solid again in Game 2, as
Ben Hylander,
Jeremiah Carter,
Daniel Wawrzyniak, and
Drake Maltry combined for just three hits and one earned run over the final five and two-thirds innings.
Trinity International are back in action on Friday afternoon, when they travel to Roosevelt for a single-game matchup starting at 3:00 p.m. The Trojans return home the next day, for a doubleheader with the Lakers from the TIU Baseball Field starting at 1:30 p.m.
