DEERFIELD, Ill. -- A pair of late-inning runs proved to be the difference, as Trinity International scored go-ahead runs in their final inning at the plate in both games, sweeping the Roosevelt Lakers in Saturday's doubleheader at the TIU Baseball Field, 5-4 in game one, and 8-7 in game two.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2Jon Grotelueschen scored the winning runs in both games, first with his solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the 6th in game one, then on
Adam Vignola's two-out single to right field in the bottom of the 8th in game two.
Ryan Helmeid picked up his second win of the year by pitching a complete game in the opener. The senior scattered eight hits and three earned runs over seven innings of work. Helmeid struck out five hitters while allowing just a single base on balls throughout the day.
Season Stats | CCAC StandingsIn game two, junior
Drake Maltry pitched a solid five innings, but
Jeremiah Carter would earn the win - his first of the season - after keeping the Lakers off the scoreboard over the final two and two-thirds innings.
The Trojan hitters got off to a strong start, scoring three runs on four hits in the 1st inning of game one.
Andrew Grotelueschen's two-RBI single scored
Cameron Stanley and
Jeff Lindberg, while
Adam Gomski came home on the next at-bat, with
A.J. Bruner hitting an RBI single on the first pitch he saw.
A two-run homer from RU's A.J. Neufeld highlighted a three-run top of the 3rd for the Lakers, tying the game at three runs apiece.
Vignola broke the tie in the bottom of the 5th, with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to center field. Roosevelt tied the game back up in the top of the 6th however, with back-to-back doubles. Helmeid got the next two Laker hitters to pop up and strike out, respectively, to strand what would have been the go-ahead run at second, allowing Jon Grotelueschen's shot in the bottom of the frame to be the game-winner.
Again in the second game, the Trojans jumped out to a 1st-inning lead, thanks to an RBI single from Gomski, and an RBI double from Bruner. Roosevelt briefly held their only lead of the day in the top of the 4th, scoring three runs on two hits, but the Trojans would move back in front during the bottom half of the frame.
Bruner,
Andrew Grotelueschen, and
Edward Piotrowski all singled to lead off the 4th for Trinity.
Jon Debowey then tied the game again with his infield single down the first base line, and Jon Grotelueschen's fielder's choice allowed his brother to score and put TIU back in front, 4-3.
Neufeld struck again for the Lakers, with his second home run of the day in the top of the 5th. The solo shot tied the game again, at 4-4.
Lindberg, Debowey, and Stanley all recorded RBIs in the bottom of the 6th, giving Trinity a 7-4 advantage, but Roosevelt responded with three of their own in the top of the 7th to even the score again. Carter then came in and retired eight of the nine batters he faced to keep the game deadlocked until Vignola's game-winning RBI in the 8th secured the sweep.
The Trojans hit the road next week, when they take on Purdue-Calumet from Hammond, Ind. on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch from Dowling Park is set for 2:00 p.m.
