Trojans split twinbill at Purdue-Calumet

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Despite suffering a walkoff defeat in game one, Trinity International battled back to earn the split with the Purdue-Calumet Peregrines on Wednesday afternoon, falling in the opener 4-3 to the hosts, before winning game two 5-1.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

The Trojans held a 3-1 lead through the 5th inning of the first game, but the Peregrines rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game, then pushed across the game-winner in the 7th.

Purdue-Calumet scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the 2nd, using a walk and a pair of two-out singles to take a 1-0 lead. The Trojans tied the game in the top of the 4th, when A.J. Bruner led the inning off by reaching base on an error. Pinch-runner Scott Krawiec advanced to second on a sac bunt, then to third on a groundout, allowing Jon Grotelueschen's single up the middle to even the score at 1-1.

Adam Vignola and Ryan Helmeid posted RBI singles in the top of the 5th, giving the Trojans a 3-1 lead. The Peregrines took advantage of a TIU fielding error in the 6th however, tying the game on a two-out, two-RBI single.

In the bottom of the 7th, Purdue-Calumet started the game-winning rally with a leadoff single, followed by a walk to put two runners on with no out. A sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position, as PUC's Anthony Colosimo smacked a ball through the left side to drive in the winning run.

Bruner pitched all six and a third innings for the Trojans, striking out two while allowing just a pair of earned runs. The junior also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Vignola reached the 100-hit milestone in his career during the first game, going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In game two, the Trojans were held to just two hits through four innings, before breaking out for four runs in the top of the 5th. After a fielding error and a hit batter placed two runners on base, Cameron Stanley doubled down the right field line, allowing Joshua Crist to score the first run of the game. Vignola then hit a two-RBI single to right on the next at-bat, as Stanley and Jeff Lindberg came around to score. Vignola moved to third on a single from Bruner, then came home to make it a 4-0 lead for Trinity on Edward Piotrowski's fielder's choice.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th would put the Peregrines on the board, but Drake Maltry worked out of a jam, leaving the bases loaded to keep the Trojans' lead intact.

Grotelueschen picked up his second RBI of the day with a triple to right-center in the top of the 8th, scoring Piotrowski and putting Trinity back in front by four runs, 5-1.

Helmeid, Maltry, and Jeremiah Carter combined to allow just five hits and one earned run, with Carter picking up the three-inning save. Stanley, Vignola, and Bruner all collected two hits in the win, going a combined 6-for-12 as the Trojans' 2-3-4 hitters.

With the win, Trinity has posted a 3-1 record over their last four games, and have five victories in the last eight contests. The Trojans return home on Friday, April 24, when they host Finlandia (Mich.) in a single, 7-inning game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
