Baseball earns soggy home victory over Finlandia

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- With light rain in the area minutes before the game, the skies cleared up just in time for first pitch, as Trinity International took a 5-1 non-conference victory over Finlandia (Mich.) on Friday afternoon.

Box Score | Season Stats

Four pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run for TIU, with Daniel Wawrzyniak picking up his first win of the season in relief. Austin Galley, Ben Hylander, Wawrzyniak and Jeremiah Carter scattered just three hits over the seven inning affair.

The Trojans struck early, as Ryan Helmeid tripled in the team's first at-bat of the day. Cameron Stanley then drove in Helmeid to give Trinity the 1-0 lead after the 1st inning.

Fielding struggles in the top of the 2nd allowed Finlandia to tie the game, as the Lions pushed across one run on one hit and three TIU errors. The Trojans moved back in front in the bottom of the 4th, with three runs to claim a 4-1 edge.

Adam Gomski and A.J. Bruner led the frame off with back-to-back singles, before Andrew Grotelueschen's single brought home Gomski. Bruner then scored on Jeff Lindberg's fielder's choice. A two-out RBI single from Jon Grotelueschen brought in Lindberg for the third score of the frame.

Trinity added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th, when Stanley hit a leadoff double down the left field line, then scored on Gomski's infield single.

The bullpen shut the door early, as Hylander and Wawrzyniak gave up just one hit from the 4th through 6th innings. Carter came on in a non-save situation and struck out the side in order in the bottom of the 7th to secure the win.

Helmeid and Gomski finished with two hits in the win, as Gomski increases his reached-base streak to 14 straight contests, the second-longest streak for the Trojans this season.

TIU will now head to Clarke (Iowa) for an afternoon doubleheader against the Crusaders on Saturday, April 25. The Trojans then will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, April 28, when they return home to face Holy Cross in a twinbill starting at 1:30 p.m.
