DEERFIELD, Ill. -- In their final home game of the 2015 season, Trinity International split a doubleheader with the Holy Cross Saints, thanks in large part to the performance of junior
A.J. Bruner. The Trojans secured a 15-2 win in game one of the doubleheader behind Bruner's complete game on the mound, before falling in the second game of the day, 15-3 in eight innings.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2Bruner allowed just two earned runs over seven innings of work, scattering seven hits. At the plate, the Evansville, Ind. native went 2-for-5, with six RBI, most of which came on a 6th inning grand slam. His six runs driven in are the most by any Trojan player in a single game since Jeff Baird matched the feat in 2012.
Jon Grotelueschen started the high-scoring affair in the bottom of the 2nd, as his home run to center field bounced up and over the top of the wall to break the scoreless tie and give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross answered with two runs on three hits in the top of the 3rd for their first and only lead of the opening game.
Season Stats | CCAC StandingsThe Trojans moved in front for good in the bottom of the 3rd, where they batted around for the first of three times in the game. The first four hitters reached base with singles, as
Adam Vignola's two-RBI base hit scored
Ryan Helmeid and
Cameron Stanley, putting Trinity ahead 3-2.
Andrew Grotelueschen later singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Vignola, before Jon Grotelueschen's single drove home his brother for the fourth run of the frame.
Trinity tacked on three more runs in the 4th, as Bruner's single down the right field line brought home a pair of Trojan baserunners.
Andrew Grotelueschen picked up his second RBI in as many innings with another single, giving TIU the 8-2 advantage.
Three more runs in the bottom of the 5th stretched the Trojans' lead, highlighted by a two-RBI base hit from
Adam Gomski, and an RBI single from pinch hitter
Justin VanderNaald.
Bruner then did all the damage in one swing in the bottom of the 6th, scoring Gomski,
Scott Krawiec, and
Evan Athanasiou, producing the 15-2 final score. On the mound, Bruner retired the final seven hitters of the game to secure the win.
In all, 11 different Trojans recorded a hit in the first game, nine player scored runs, and six players drove in at least one run.
In game two, Holy Cross responded with a high-powered attack of their own, finishing with 15 runs on 21 hits. The Saints put up five runs in the top of the 2nd for the early advantage, before Trinity responded in their next two trips to the plate. After both Grotelueschens singled to lead off the bottom of the 2nd,
Edward Piotrowski's single to center field brought both home, cutting the HCC lead to 5-2. The next inning, Gomski's leadoff double led to another run, on a single from Bruner.
Trinity managed just two hits over the next four innings, as Holy Cross slowly expanded their lead the rest of the way, scoring at least one run over the final four innings.
Gomski finished game two with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, as the only Trojan with two or more base hits in the game. The sophomore finishes the season by reaching base safely in each of the final 18 games.
Stanley finishes the season with the team's longest hitting streak of the season. The senior hit safely in the last 11 games for the Trojans, matching Vignola's and Lindberg's 11-game hit streaks from the 2014 season.
Trinity International finishes the 2015 season with a 9-42 record overall, 7-22 in the CCAC.
