DEERFIELD, Ill. -- In a rematch of last season's NAIA Tournament Opening Round match, Trinity International women's soccer opened the 2015 season with a physical, back-and-forth battle against the 11th-ranked The Master's (Calif.) Mustangs, earning a scoreless draw after two overtime periods.
Box ScoreThe Master's outshot the 17th-ranked Trojans 11-10 on the day, with seven shots on goal to Trinity's four. Possession was balanced throughout the match, with both sides surging to take control in different moments.
The Mustangs (0-0-1) looked in charge in long stretches of the first half, outshooting TIU 6-3. After the halftime break, however, Trinity looked poised to break through and put away the first goal of the match; TIU's wingers
Morgan Elzinga and
Isabelle Danner made a number of runs up both sides of the pitch, but were unable to connect with a teammate on the cross.
The closest chance for either side came in the first overtime period, when TMC's Jasmine Parada struck a ball that deflected off the crossbar and down into the six-yard box before being cleared away by the TIU defense. Sophomore goalkeeper
Surina Lewandowski, in her second collegiate start, made seven saves on the day to record her first career shutout.
Elzinga led the Trojans with four shots on the day, including a pair of shots on goal.
Samantha Yasatan and
Gina Collesano recorded two shots apiece.
The draw snaps a streak of three straight victories for Trinity International in their season-opening match. The last time the team was shutout in the first match of the year came in 2011, in an 0-2 defeat to Corban (Ore.).
The Trojans will continue the current three-match homestand on Saturday, when they host the Marian (Ind.) Knights in non-conference action. Kickoff from Schartner Field is set for 4:00 p.m., with a live webcast available at
