DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The 17th-ranked Trinity International women's soccer team had their hands full Saturday afternoon, struggling to maintain possession and ultimately falling to the visiting Marian (Ind.) Knights, 2-1 at Schartner Field.
Box Score | Season StatsThe Trojans (0-1-1) were on the defensive throughout much of the first half, and were out-shot by Marian 9-0 before the break. Sophomore goalkeeper
Surina Lewandowski finished with five saves on the day, including four in the first half, but the Knights broke through in the 20th minute with the first goal of the day. MU's Kellie Cavanaugh slotted a shot from the left past the keeper and inside the far post to put the Knights in front.
Trinity responded after halftime and worked to dictate the action into the attacking third more often, resulting in a 7-4 lead in shots in the second half. Senior forward
Samantha Yasatan found the equalizer in the 67th minute for her first goal of the year, while freshman winger
Isabelle Danner recorded her first career assist on the play.
Two minutes later, Marian struck again, with a goal from Gaby Brocious that put the Knights ahead for good. The Trojans had a few chances in the closing minutes thanks to shots from
Morgan Elzinga, who finished with a team-high three in the match, but couldn't pull even.
With the loss, Trinity suffers its first home defeat in over a year; TIU snaps a 10-match win streak at Schartner Field that stretched back to Oct. 29, 2013 and a loss to Robert Morris.
The Trojans will look to start a new streak on their home pitch next Saturday, September 5, when they host Concordia (Mich.) in a men's and women's doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
