Men's Soccer overcomes two-goal deficit to defeat Cougars

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Trailing by two scores with just under an hour to play, Trinity International responded with three unanswered goals, including the game winner in the 88th minute, to defeat the visiting St. Xavier Cougars Tuesday afternoon at Schartner Field. Freshman forward Tyler Cake capped off the comeback for the Trojans, with his first career game-winning goal.

The Trojans (5-2, 1-1 CCAC) outshot the Cougars by a 20-13 margin throughout the match, but St. Xavier (3-4, 0-1 CCAC) scored two first-half goals off the foot of Orlanda Tapia. SXU struck first in the 15th minute, then doubled their lead in the 34th, poised to take what would have been their seventh straight win over Trinity International.

Responding with less than five minutes to play in the first half, junior Zach Reget worked the ball to the left of goal, crossing for Phil Parker to take a one-timer shot that flew by the keeper to make it a 2-1 score. Another ball sent across the mouth of the goal in the final seconds resulted in Zach Miller scoring just before the buzzer sounded to tie the game, his first goal of the season.

At the end of a long second half that saw a combined 20 shots between both sides, Cake finally broke through, scoring off of Zach Reget's pass in from the left with just over two minutes remaining. Cake becomes the fifth different Trojan to score a game-winner this year, and is one of five players with two or more goals this season.

Redshirt freshman Jared Yonke earns his fifth win of the season, making two saves on the day.

With the win, Trinity surpasses last year's win total in just their seventh match, as the Trojans are now 5-2 on the season. The Trojans continue their current homestand with a non-conference matchup against the Clarke (Iowa) Crusaders on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff from Schartner Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
