Zach Kirschbaum led the way with his sixth straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Three Trojans finished in double figures in the win, with
Grant Corsi collecting 15 points and
Thomas Amrine posting 11 points, including a 3-for-6 performance from long range.
"This game was a battle, and I'm really proud of our group," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts. "We couldn't buy a bucket, so we needed to band together and get stops. And when you're playing the highest-scoring team in the league, that is tough. But our guys rose to the challenge, and got stops when we needed them.
Zach and Grant were really good throughout, and Thomas, Sean [Smith], and Greg [Carlyle] made some huge threes in the second half."The Trojans (13-8, 6-6 CCAC) held Robert Morris to their lowest point total of the season, as the Eagles (17-5, 10-2 CCAC) shot a combined 11.8% from three-point range, and 36.6% (26-71) overall.
Trinity took control late in a first half that saw six lead changes, when
Luke Mead drew a shooting foul from beyond the arc, and converted all three free throws to tie the game at 25-25. Smith hit a trey on the next possession, and Amrine knocked down one of his threes with :30 remaining to give the Trojans a 33-27 halftime advantage.
The Trojans held that lead until the 15:49 mark of the second half, when RMU's Corey McCrary hit a jumper to put the Eagles in front 38-37. Robert Morris would lead by as much as six midway through the second, until a 14-4 run from TIU, capped with a four-point play from
Greg Carlyle, gave the Trojans a 58-54 lead with 8:04 to play.
Trinity would go up by six moments later, and would hold off the Eagles by allowing just one field goal over the final four and a half minutes.
"We're grateful for the fun ride God is taking us on, but we know there are a lot of games left, including probably the best team in the league on the road on Saturday," said Roberts.
The Trojans will face No. 3 St. Francis, their third consecutive nationally-ranked opponent, on Saturday, January 23. The Saints are currently in a four-way tie at the top of the CCAC standings with a 10-2 mark in league play. Tipoff from the Sullivan Center in Joliet is set for 7:00 p.m.
