DAVENPORT, Iowa - A pair of Trojans put up 20 points on Tuesday night, but Trinity International were unable to keep up with the host St. Ambrose Bees, falling on the road 86-60.
Sean Smith finished with a career-high 23 points, while Cory Windle pitched in with 21 points on the night.
Box Score | Season StatsSmith shot 7-of-16 from the field in his first ever 20-point performance, while Windle nearly recorded his first double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. "I thought Sean was terrific tonight," said TIU head coach
Boomer Roberts. "I've only seen a few guys work as hard as he did this summer, and it's really paid off. I love coaching him. Cory had a couple jumpers rim out, but if they would have dropped he would 've had 30 tonight; he's been excellent for us."
While the Trinity starting five looked strong, the Trojans' (8-8, 2-6 CCAC) bench were outscored by the Bees (5-8, 3-4 CCAC) by a 41-1 margin. "When you play with seven guys against a solid team on the road, our lack of depth was bound to get us, and it did," said Roberts. "But it wasn't for a lack of fight, which is why our staff is proud of the fellas who suited up tonight."
The Trojans fell behind in the first half by as much as 14, when St. Ambrose hit a three with 8:50 on the clock to make it a 26-12 score. Trinity responded, as Smith hit a layup while drawing the foul, and completed the three-point play on the following possession. TIU then closed out the final 1:41 of the first half on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 35-29 at the break.
Windle brought the team to within three, with five straight points to begin the second half, 37-34. The Bees answered with 11 straight however, pulling away with a 48-34 advantage with 15:46 to play, and would remain comfortably ahead the rest of the night.
Trinity returns to Van Dixhorn Arena on Thursday, January 7, when they host the Cardinal Stritch Wolves. Tipoff in the first game of 2016 is set for 7:30 p.m.
