The Trojans (8-19) overcame a slow start to the first set, tying the score at 8-8 after a 7-2 run. A Clarke attack error gave Trinity their first lead of the night at 16-15, but the Crusaders (17-8) used a 7-1 rally to close out the set.
A tight early second set resulted in a narrow 7-5 lead for the Trojans, after four straight points on a
Mickayla Staal kill and three straight CU errors. Trinity would hold a narrow lead throughout the game, but a 4-1 rally would help distance the Trojans from their opponents, finishing with a kill from
Alida Knudtson at 22-18. Back-to-back kills from
Lexie Voss set up game point, and
Gabby Miller's kill at 25-20 would even the match at one set apiece.
After pulling even, the Trojans struggled in the first few points of game three, as Clarke jumped out to a 7-2 lead they would hold the rest of the way. Jacks and Knudtson would score three straight kills midway through the set, but that would be the longest rally of the game for Trinity, who dropped the set 25-14.
Another slow start gave the Crusaders a 7-1 lead in game four, but Trinity would slowly climb back in the game. A 6-1 rally that included three kills from Jacks made it a 16-12 score, and TIU would climb to within three points at 18-15 after an attacking error, but were unable to even the score as Clarke finished the match with a 25-21 final score.
Voss finished the night with ten kills, while defensively
Ashlyn Spay and
Becca Kowalczuk finished with a team-high 14 digs apiece.
The Trojans jump back into conference play this Thursday, October 13, when they travel to take on the Robert Morris Eagles. First serve from Arlington Heights is set for 7:00 p.m.
