After the Saints (5-4) scored with a 21-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, the Trojans (3-7) forced a punt on eight of the next nine possessions, a run that stretched late into the third quarter. Siena Heights would go three-and-out on every drive of the first quarter except for their first, keeping the Trinity offense in the game.
A punt deep into Trojan territory set up the visitors to extend their lead with a safety on a screen pass with 2:22 in the first quarter, but that would be the final scoring play of the first half, as the Trojan offense struggled to build enough momentum to work its way into field goal range.
Trinity crossed midfield for the first time midway through the third quarter, when the defense pinned Siena Heights to inside their own 20 and forced a punt. The Trojans took over on their own 45 yardline, and
Isaac Branch's 17-yard run put TIU in positive territory. Six plays later, Branch broke free on a third-and-7, rushing for a 21-yard touchdown to give the Trojans their first lead of the day at the 6:28 mark. The two-point conversion fell incomplete however, leaving the Trojans with a narrow 6-5 advantage.
Using a big defensive top the Trojans extended their lead in the fourth. A fumble in the backfield near midfield was picked up by
Godfrey Collins II, giving Trinity great field position at the SHU 45-yardline. After a big 25-yard completion from
J.J. Burmeister to
Alex Johns-Moore moved the ball into the red zone, the junior quarterback would find senior
Cory Windle for a three-yard TD pass to put the Trojans ahead 13-5 with 10:08 remaining.
The Trojans would again get a big stop on defense, but the Saints would break through to tie the game with just 1:15 on the clock on a 20-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion that just cleared the goal line.Â
Burmeister drove Trinity downfield, using two big scrambles of ten yards apiece, while a penalty on the Saints helped to set up TIU in field goal territory. Carter then put his team in front with a 44-yard field goal with just two seconds remaining.
A TIU penalty on the following kickoff would give the Saints a chance at a hail mary from the TIU 45 yardline, but the pass was intercepted by
Daniel Harris to secure the second victory in as many weeks for the Trojans.
Riley Schussler again led the defense, making 12 tackles on the day. Linebacker
Bayley Pierson collected two sacks, while
Leland Orrin, Collins, and
Shynol McClain all had one sack apiece.
Branch finished the day with 106 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Windle led the receiving corps with three catches and one touchdown.
Trinity will wrap up the 2016 season next Saturday, when they hit the road to face Taylor, beginning at 12:00 p.m. CST.
