DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The Trinity International defense struggled to find an answer from long range on Wednesday night, as the 25th-ranked St. Ambrose Bees knocked down 15 three-pointers to defeat the Trojans, 90-78 inside Van Dixhorn Arena.
Box Score | Season StatsJaToya Woods led the way for Trinity (7-16, 3-13 CCAC) with 26 points, as four players in all finished in double figures. Woods also earned her second career double-double, bringing down a team-high 11 rebounds on the night.
Marlou Peters collected 16 points off the bench, while
Arielle Miree posted a season-high 15 points, and
Rayelle Ross tallied 11.
The Trojans held an early lead, when
Sarina Falvo opened the game with a jumper to give TIU the 2-0 edge. Both sides traded one-point leads until Ross knocked down a trey to put the Trojans ahead 7-5 at the 8:02 mark of first period.
St. Ambrose (17-7, 11-4 CCAC) responded by reeling off 15 straight points, including four made three-pointers, over the a 2:15 span. Trinity rallied back to make it a six-point game at the end of the first period, 27-21, thanks to a three from Miree with 11 seconds on the clock.
TIU were unable to pull any closer in the second period, as the St. Ambrose lead would grow to as much as 24 points, 52-28 at the halftime break.
Trinity outscored the Bees in both third and fourth periods to close the gap, shooting 42.9% from the field and committing just one turnover in the second half. The Trojans closed the game on a 13-0 run, but ran out of time to pull off the comeback.
The Trojans hit the road this weekend, to take on No. 15 Cardinal Stritch this Saturday. Tipoff from Milwaukee, Wisc. is set for 2:00 p.m.
